Traffic Management in the Barcelona Ring Road Tunnels

CPS carried out the drafting of the new strategic protocol for traffic management in the event of incidents in the tunnels of the Barcelona ring roads ( B-10, B-20 and C-32). This project, framed in the European initiative INMAB, arises from the need to modernize infrastructures that, after more than two decades of service, require advanced solutions to reduce congestion, pollution and noise in the metropolitan area.

To achieve this, our team of specialists works on the definition of critical scenarios both inside the tunnels and in the “trench” sections, identifying those points of particular sensitivity for urban mobility.. CPS not only analyzes the current operation, but also projects the future of the network by proposing new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and dynamic signaling measures.

This action was coordinated with the future tunnel-specific Control Center to provide it with the technological tools and coordination instruments necessary for efficient and sustainable management.

The project completed a comprehensive characterization of mobility on the Rondas, integrating digital data on intensities, speeds and occupancy to model real traffic behavior. This work included the creation of a detailed catalog of management and information measures that are activated according to the severity and duration of each incident, ensuring full compatibility with existing operating manuals.

At an advanced stage, the project focused on the digitization and future computerization of the protocol, facilitating its integration into the room operators’ management tools. CPS delivered a complete dossier that serves as a technical basis for future tenders and infrastructure improvements, including a detailed assessment of the needs in sensorization and communications equipment that are not yet implemented.
