Implementation of a Dynamic Weighing System on the State Highway Network

As part of the contract titled “Services for the Upgrading, Maintenance, and Modernization of the Traffic Counting and Sensing System on the State Highway Network,” initiated by the Ministry of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility (MITMS), CPS, as part of a joint venture (UTE), has successfully implemented a new dynamic on-road weighing system (WIM, Weigh-In-Motion) in Tui, Pontevedra.

What is a WIM system, and how does it work?

A WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) system is a technology that measures the weight of moving vehicles without interrupting traffic, thanks to a combination of piezoelectric sensors—which capture the load applied by each axle as the vehicle passes—and electromagnetic loops, which provide data on speed, length, and wheelbase.

The result is accurate vehicle classification and automatic detection of overloaded vehicles, which helps protect the road surface and promote road safety.
